The presentation included a day of Israeli dance in the Semmes Gym lead by local Jewish dance instructor, Linda Parker. In addition, two assemblies were held in the Munnerlyn Center led by Episcopal&amp;amp;rsquo;s own history teacher, Matthew Levenson. Matthew spoke about his great grandfather who grew up in a Jewish shtetl around the same time and place that Tevye, the main character in Fiddler on the Roof, lived in with his family. The contest was open to students under age 18 in Duval and Clay Counties. Maria&amp;amp;rsquo;s essay was selected as the best of 50 entries.
Perlman held the contest as a way to move the emphasis from a society that &amp;amp;ldquo;seems to be living in a &amp;amp;lsquo;me and I&amp;amp;rsquo; kind of culture.&amp;amp;rdquo; Perlman said of Maria, &amp;amp;ldquo;our winner showed a sense of caring and maturity seldom seen in a ninth grader. Andrew, Kristie, and Deanna all completed the humanities program, while Leslie completed the science. According to the UNF website, the Joe Berg Seminars of Jacksonville is a prestigious academic seminar series which offers twelve seminars yearly between September and May in the humanities and sciences. Membership extends from the middle of the sophomore year to the middle of the senior year. In the fall of their sophomore year, potential Joe Berg participants are nominated by their high school teachers and guidance counselors based upon their GPA and demonstrated interest in enrichment. These nominees sit for a rigorous examination in either the sciences or humanities. Culminating their study, students worked in groups during their lab period to prepare the perfect fudge. Following the fudge recipe on the Marshmallow Cr&amp;amp;egrave;me jar for the base, students customized their creations with secret ingredients including fresh mint, nuts, and raspberries. As they prepared the fudge on Monday, the students learned first-hand about the Law of Definite Proportions, limiting reactants and the pitfalls of using excess reactants. On a mission, Jack approached Pat Andrews for support of the project, and with her permission he organized a bake sale. The moment of silence is scheduled for 8:46 a.m. in memory of American Airlines Flight 11 which first crashed into the World Trade Center's North Tower. During the minute of silence our community will also remember the additional attacks at 9:03 a.m. (United Airlines Flight 175, which hit the South Tower), 9:37 a.m. (American Airlines Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon), and 10:03 a.m. (United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania).
