English sites - American literature

  • American Authors on the Web - Links to American authors from 1550-1950.
  • American Writers II - Continue a journey through history with C-SPAN's series, American Writers II: The 20th Century. From March to July 2002, C-SPAN explored American history through the lives and works of selected twentieth century American writers who have influenced the course of our nation and looked at what their works mean to Americans today.
  • Dickinson Electronic Archives - DEA was created by a consortium of scholars seeking to make the life and works of Emily Dickinson available online. The Writings section contains scholarly articles and correspondence with the famed poet. Click Responses for written and audio opinions of Dickinson’s work. Critical Resources offers fascinating close-up views of her actual handwritten manuscripts. Teaching with the Archives features The Classroom Electric, a compilation of links that focus on Dickinson’s and fellow poet Walt Whitman’s impact on American culture.
  • Mark Twain in His Times - This interpretive archive by a professor at the University of Virginia puts the writer and his works into a historical context and can, for example, help students decide for themselves whether Twain portrays Jim as "character or caricature." The site is built around five of Twain's full-length works.
