Burgman Chair in English

billy_crop.jpgIt is with great pride that Episcopal High School announces the establishment of the Leo C. Burgman Chair in English through gifts made possible by his daughter and son-in-law, Jim and Mary Winston. Although not a published author, Mr. Burgman loved to write: his children treasured his gift because they knew he enjoyed the pleasure the stories brought them. Because of this talent, the Winston family has chosen to memorialize Mary's father, who passed away in 1976. The Chair is also a blessing for Episcopal, since it’s the School’s very first endowed chair in any academic subject.

William Valentine, an Episcopal faculty member since 1969, will be the first holder of the Chair. Mr. Valentine has taught Russian, Greek, Latin and English during his tenure at Episcopal. He said of the honor, "This makes it all worthwhile. Teaching was hard for me at first, and I had to change a lot, but this validates everything I have done here. It's nice to know that others recognize what I’ve worked to do at Episcopal."
