The Middle School visual arts program offers sixth-grade students a quarter class devoted to various art mediums. Seventh- and eighth-grade students rotate opposite physical education every other day, resulting in a four-and-one-half week study of art fundamentals. The Upper School visual arts program includes drawing, painting, photography, ceramics, and art history.

Studio art 1 and studio art 2 are offered as a full-year elective course on a semester basis. Studio art 3 and studio art 4 are offered to complete the fine arts requirement for track students. Honors portfolio provides the year-long opportunity for students to prepare a portfolio for college application. AP portfolio is presently offered to students by teacher recommendation as a full-year elective course to be evaluated on the national level for college credit.

Photography is currently offered as a semester course focusing on basic darkroom techniques.

Ceramics 1 through 6 are offered as semester courses introducing the student to hand-building techniques and progressing to wheel throwing. Firing and glazing methods are also presented. Advanced ceramics 1 and advanced ceramics 2 give the students an opportunity to prepare a portfolio for college application.

Art history is offered as a semester class designed to meet graduation requirements. AP art history is a year-long class to be evaluated on the national level for college credit.

What is the FANS parent organization?

FANS is a parent support organization that serves to enhance the fine arts experience for every Episcopal High School student, beyond that provided by the Episcopal Fine Arts Department. We accomplish this in a variety of ways, including sponsoring and funding workshops, seminars, guest performers and artists; promoting fine arts events; and planning, organizing, funding and hosting various receptions for the fine arts disciplines.

How can I volunteer?

FANS volunteers are vital, and we welcome your involvement and participation! We have volunteer opportunities to suit every level of interest, including reception-planning, organizing, and hosting; event promotion; ticket sales assistance; and other hands-on activities. You can volunteer by completing and returning the FANS membership form.

How are membership dues used?

FANS membership dues provide essential support to various endeavors that enhance the fine arts experience for students, such as providing financial assistance that enables students to participate in various off-campus events, funding guest artists and other Fine Arts Week activities, as well as the Christmas Band and Choral Concert, the Spring Dance Concert, and many other receptions and activities. One of our primary roles is to fund guest teachers who work with our students in the Fine Arts. Some of  the workshops FANS has funded so far this year include:

  • Band – Adjunct guitar instructor Michael Valenzano will teach master guitar classes.
  • Dance – Tap choreographer Nikki Stokes worked with Middle School dance ensembles on numbers to be performed at “Cabaret Night.”
  • Middle School Theater -  Guest artists Chris Beaulieu and Jess Pillmore taught Middle School thespians on the art of stage combat in preparation for their performance, Murder in the Knife Room.

In addition, FANS provided funding for construction of an authentic display cabinet for ethnic pieces created by the Ceramics students.

Episcopal High School's reputation for excellence in the fine arts is well-known throughout the region. The fine arts enable students to envision, to create and to transcend logic. Episcopal's faculty consists of professional artists, consultants, and recognized leaders & educators in their fields. Our facilities, such as the Munnerlyn Center for Worship and Fine Arts, which opened in 2004, the arts complex and the mini-theatre, are exceptional. The fine arts curriculum is academically and creatively challenging, hands-on, and vital for a balanced education. As their individual talents and abilities are explored, our fine arts program allows students to acknowledge and develop their gifts. The focus of fine arts is to unite in the process. We do this with respect, guidelines, evaluation and affirmation.

You may also contribute to the Fine Arts Fund, which brings visiting artists and exhibits to campus, purchases & maintains musical instruments, underwrites dance & theatrical productions, and enhances our fine arts facilities, equipment and resources.
