Episcopal High School 2005-2006 Annual Fund goal: $525,000
Our goal for the 2005-2006 Episcopal Fund represents the most important areas to which Episcopal High School has made commitments:
The driving force of each student's day is the academic coursework. Episcopal's classical program of study is built on analysis and interpretation, emphasizing verbal and written expression. The challenging college-preparatory study is regularly enhanced with the introduction of new courses developed to create an environment that encourages intellectual growth. New courses in applied mathematics, statistics, science research seminars and photography are examples of ways we strive to maintain a cutting-edge curriculum. Gifts to The Academic Programs Fund help us do the following:
Episcopal's widely-recognized and award-winning fine arts program offers students opportunities for self-expression, personal creativity and group performance. There is a full-range of classes and extra-curricular activities at every level in the visual and performing arts. At Episcopal, we emphasize art instruction as an integral part of a complete education. It enhances the educational experience, self-esteem and overall academic performance. Gifts to The Arts Fund help us do the following:
Episcopal's athletic program is committed to winning, but its higher goal is to teach important lessons in dedication, determination and teamwork. We applaud our student athletes and are proud of the way these students excel not only on the field, but in the classroom and in other areas of our school community. With 54 teams in 16 different sports for boys and girls at the Middle School, Junior Varsity and Varsity levels, 71% of Upper School and 72% of Middle School students participate in at least one sport. Our strong coaching staff acts as role models and mentors for these students. Gifts to The Athletics Fund help us do the following:
The educational experience at Episcopal is uniquely enhanced by the natural beauty of the campus and by architecture that affords students the opportunity to enjoy the environment. This year we add two spectacular new facilities: the Munnerlyn Center for Worship and Fine Arts at our 58-acre main campus and the Walton Boathouse and Riverfront Activity Center at the Raymond D. Knight property. Upkeep, renovation and maintenance of all our facilities are ongoing and are integral to a positive learning atmosphere. Gifts to The Campus Fund help us do the following:
Episcopal High School is grounded in its Episcopal heritage and Christian tradition. From this foundation have grown the values that shape our school and our educational environment. Moral, ethical and spiritual growth are integral to our students' educational experience. We accomplish this through religious programs and worship, a strong honor code, community service opportunities, programs that honor and celebrate the diversity in our world and a commitment to enhancing diversity within our own faculty and student bodies. Gifts to the Community Outreach and Spiritual Development Fund might:
Great teachers make a great school. Our faculty shares a breadth and depth of strengths and personalities, all with a common interest: a dedication to teaching and a desire to ignite a passion for knowledge and lifelong learning. For our faculty, commitment to their students is paramount, as is pride in their work and in Episcopal High School. They embrace opportunities for personal and professional growth. Gifts to The Faculty Fund help us do the following:
Many changes have taken place in campus technology over the past decade. The School network connects more than 300 computers, including computer presentation stations in every classroom. The campus houses six computer labs: two student labs, a student research lab, a foreign language lab, a writing lab, and an instructional technology center for faculty training. Computer Science is an academic department, and the Technology Office staff keeps School resources up to date, provides training for faculty & staff, and assists faculty in integrating technology into the curriculum. Gifts to The Technology Fund help us do the following:
There are times during the year when great opportunities or challenges not anticipated or included in the operating budget arise. These are moments when our Headmaster must consider carefully where to find financial resources. Gifts to the Headmaster's Discretionary Fund might cover the cost of the following:
Episcopal's families appreciate academic quality, spiritual commitment, small class size, low student/faculty ratio, the honor code and the caring nature of our community. If your desire is to demonstrate your financial support of the School to be used for the area of greatest need , we promise to do just that, and we extend our thanks to you for your continuing supportive trust.
More than 350 members of the Episcopal High School community gathered at the Semmes Athletic Center for on Saturday, April 9, for Twilight in Tuscany. Guests were greeted by faculty & staff upon their arrival, and were serenaded by a strolling violinist. The lobby was transformed into the terrace of an Italian villa with fountain, flowers and trees. The ballroom (otherwise known as the gym) glittered with twinkle lights hung from the grape arbor over the dance floor, and flowers spilled out of the window boxes from the shuttered windows hanging on the entry wall. A twilight landscape of Tuscany provided the backdrop for the stage, and guests found themselves transported to a very special corner of Italy for the evening. Donna and Jim Cardone, with the help of designer Chris Shockling and dozens of volunteers, provided this beautiful setting for a spectacular party.

Chairs Laurie Stewart Mai and Karen Seals, along with an outstanding committee, spent nearly a year planning and preparing for Celebration 2005. The decision was made to move the event to the Semmes after thirty years in the Buck Center. The additional space provided was noticeable, and allowed for beautiful auction displays arranged by Paula Margiotta and Clare Berry. There was additional space for guests to stroll, visit and dance in this lovely setting as well.
Matt 'Shotgun' Basford '87, from Rooster Country 107.3 served as master of ceremonies, and set a high-energy, fun tone for the evening. Steve Murray, parent '99, returned as auctioneer and produced nearly $50,000 in bids. Thanks to live auction chairs Cathy Cosby and Sarah Leuthold, Episcopal folks will be traveling to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, the American Club, and other destinations; other lucky attendees will receive lasik surgery, an autographed Elton John framed gold album, and several other fine purchases.
We welcome your involvement in the life of the school, and we truly appreciate your time. Please take a moment to look over the volunteer positions and feel free to contact the number listed by each opportunity for additional information.

Since the founding of Episcopal High School 40 years ago, the commitment and generosity of families, trustees, and friends have built the School into a recognized leader of independent education in northeast Florida. The School provides over 900 students in grades six to twelve with a quality education which depends on charitable giving and the volunteer efforts of our entire community.
The Episcopal Fund is the foundation of all giving to Episcopal. Contributions support the current operating budget, and are expended on items or improvements which will sustain our educational and extracurricular programs. Gifts to The Episcopal Fund maintain the level of excellence we have all come to expect.
Episcopal High School holds two special fundraising events annually: the Celebration auction & dinner and an Episcopal golf tournament. The success of these two events is due to the hundreds of volunteers, donors and guests who come together in support of Episcopal. Funds raised through special events enhance the programs and resources available for our students and help with special campus projects.
There are many giving options, with potential tax benefits accompanying each choice. Gifts may be tailored to express the donor's interests and tax situation.
Most gifts to Episcopal High School are cash contributions, for which donors receive tax benefits if they itemize deductions.
Gifts of appreciated stocks provide immediate support to the School. Donors may realize substantial tax savings by transferring appreciated stock to the School prior to the sale. Capital gains on the amount of appreciation may be avoided, and the donor may receive a tax deduction based on the fair market value of the stock at the time of the gift.
Whether you give cash or securities, yours may be one of the many employers who offer matching gift programs...which double, and in some cases even triple, the value of your gift to the School. These gifts can mean thousands of dollars for Episcopal High School. Is your employer a matching-gift company? Find out here!
Please contact your employer for matching gift guidelines for your company. A list of matching gift companies is available from the Advancement Office at 396.5751, ext.1104.
Donations of technology, equipment, furniture and other items relevant to our educational program and in good condition are welcome. The donor, through appraisal, market comparisons or record of purchase, determines the fair market value of the gift. If the gift-in-kind is of direct and immediate value to Episcopal High School in fulfilling its mission (such as new computer equipment for instructional use), the donor may deduct the full fair market value. There are limitations on the amount that may be deducted for tangible personal property the use of which does not meet the mission of the School. Please contact the Advancement Office for details.
Gifts of real estate, including personal residences, vacation homes, commercial properties, and unimproved land, may offer exceptional tax benefits for the donors while providing support for the School. Similar to the situation with appreciated stock and securities, if ownership of the unencumbered real estate is transferred to Episcopal High School prior to its sale, the donor will receive a charitable gift deduction, and will likely avoid the capital-gains tax associated with that appreciation.
Deferred giving, often referred to as planned giving, allows almost any individual to provide a gift to Episcopal High School while carrying out personal financial goals. Through planned giving, donors may find they are able to make a more generous gift to Episcopal while receiving financial benefits such as increased current income, tax savings, avoidance of capital-gains tax, and reduced estate-settlement costs. Please notify the School if you have already included, or plan to include Episcopal in your estate plans, and we will add your name to the Mary Packer Cummings Society. Established in 1999, the Cummings Society honors individuals who provide for the School through deferred gifts, such as bequests, life insurance, annuities and trust agreements. The society is named for Mrs. Cummings, who in 1912 bequeathed to St. John's Episcopal Cathedral the property on which the School was established. A few of the available planned giving options include:
There are many ways in which life insurance policies can be used to make a contribution, all of which provide tax deductions and may enable donors to make a larger gift than would otherwise be possible.
A valid, updated will is the cornerstone of an effective estate plan. Charitable gifts provide one of the few remaining deductions to estate taxes. By making provisions in your will for the School, you make a gift to the future of Episcopal High School.
As deferred gifts and some forms of current gifts can be quite complicated and carry significant tax benefits, donors are encouraged to consult the Advancement Office and their own financial planner when contemplating gifts. Contact the advancement office at 904.396.5751, ext. 1103, for information!
