On September 22, 2004, Episcopal students entered the Munnerlyn Center for Worship & Fine Arts accompanied by prelude music from a new concert electronic organ. Chapel services, which included a selection by the chorus, were enhanced by the new instrument, played by guest organist Michael Dell, organist and co-director of music at First Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville.
The concert organ was purchased through the generosity of several benefactors, including former faculty member Mel Hazen and his wife, Madge Bruner Hazen, as well as fine arts department chair Lynne Howard and her husband, Larry. The leadership gift for the instrument was generously provided by Marian and Earl Poitevent; Mrs. Poitevent currently serves as an honorary trustee of the School.
According to Mrs. Howard, the organ was a much-needed addition to Episcopal’s performing arts programs and chapel services. She commented, “The organ has helped us re-connect with our Anglican roots, which boast an incredibly rich musical tradition. We also believe that the sound of the organ helps establish an atmosphere of reverence as students enter for worship.”
